St. Vincent College Prepares To Open For Steelers

LATROBE (KDKA) ― Saint Vincent College is preparing for the 44th annual Pittsburgh Steelers summer training camp.

And this year, the college says they have made substantial improvements for the camp.

There will now be three practice fields instead of two, including a new synthetic turf field that was built for students, but Steelers will be able to use it too. The fields will also be regulation length.

Officials say there is also a new retaining wall along the length of the field. Plus, a new welcome center has been installed at the entrance to campus.

The Steelers will reside in Rooney Hall, the same rooms where many Saint Vincent students live during the school year.

Facilities officials are now working to remove the dorm room furniture and replace it with items that the players have requested.

The Steelers will also eat in the same cafeteria where students eat during the school year. The dining staff has ordered 5,300 pieces of chicken, more than 1,200 pounds of fish, 600 pounds of beef and 1,500 pounds of fresh vegetables.

The chef says they will also have around 160 gallons of orange juice on hand and 90 gallons of guava and grape juice.

The players are expected to consume 120 pounds every day of bananas, plums, nectarines, peaches, oranges, apples, grapefruits and cherries.

The newest addition to the dining room will be two large Panini presses that can make 32 custom-made hot deli sandwiches at a time.

Dining officials say the most popular breakfast item by far is the four-egg omelet. The most commonly requested item at other meals is turkey burgers. An extra supply has been ordered this year to meet the high demand.

Camp is set to open on July 31st and practice sessions begin at 3 p.m.

Admission and parking for fans are both free.
