Dave Crawley's Steelers Poem: Ode To The 'D'

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Steelers offense rang up 33 points in a stunning win over the New England Patriots on November 30, 2008. But as usual, the winning formula was cooked up by the defense. Dave Crawley has "An Ode To The 'D'" in KD Country.

An Ode To The "D"
A Poem By Dave Crawley

Black and Gold rules in a cauldron of steel,
Where visiting teams face a fearsome ordeal.
From Bradshaw to Bettis, the arm of Big Ben,
They've vanquished their rivals again and again.

But when we take time to examine this team,
It's that dominant defense that's always supreme.
It began with the bruisers of Steel Curtain fame.
Joe Green. Jack Lambert. They played a rough game.

But now a phenomenon no one expected.
A state of affairs that must not be neglected.
Under the radar, this team works its will
With a stunning rendition of bone-crushing skill.

But Dick LeBeau's defense appeared to be doomed
In the season's twelfth game as the Patriots loomed.
The Pats took the lead in this annual scrape
As the Phantoms of Foxboro slowly took shape.

They led seven zip to make Steelers fans fret.
Then added three more. But that's all they would get.
It turned out the Steelers best offense of all
Took place when the Patriots carried the ball.

James Harrison trapped Cassell, the frightened QB.
He stripped him in public! The whole world could see!
The Steelers replied with a field goal and then
Look out Cassell! Oh, he stripped him again!

Now Timmons tacks on to the quarterback's plight.
Just a little bit further. He made it? Not quite.
But hey, that's okay. With just a yard more,
They said let the offense go in for the score.

When facing the Steelers, opponents beware.
Your best hope to win is a punt and a prayer.
