Steelers Play Guitar Hero With Soldiers Overseas

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A Friday game for the Steelers?

It wasn't on the field and not everyone played, but it sure was memorable.

Some of the players had a very important video game matchup with those serving our country overseas.

Via satellite, the soldiers were able to see who they were up against and some of the Steelers who stopped by to say hello, including Willie Parker, Cary Davis, Hines Ward and Troy Polamalu.

After the introductions, it was time for a little bit of trash talking.

The game is called "Pro vs. GI Joe" and it was created by Addie Zinone and her husband.

She is still in the military and has served two tours in Iraq.

"This is an opportunity and a way that the professional athletescan say thank you to the troops from their community in a really fun way," she said.

The soldiers and Steelers could see each other via the internet. It was the battle of the bands. The game was "Guitar Hero 5."

The song – "Play That Funky Music."

Darnell Stapleton and Ben Roethlisberger were on guitar, Trai Essex was on drums and Willie Colon was the lead singer.

"To be able to interact with these guys and enjoy it and I could see the joy on their faces and get to beat them a little bit in some rock band – it's a lot of fun," Roethlisberger said.

"I'm a military son myself," Essex said. "My dad was in the Air Force so it is an honor and a privilege to do something like this. I feel humble knowing that they are serving for us and it's just a great thing that we are doing."

It was special for the family members who watched.

"Getting to see him up there and getting to see him doing something exciting to just boost their morale and stuff – it means a lot," Amanda Bernard, whose husband is in Iraq, said.

"It meant a lot to my family and for my husband to see us here," Christine Barnhart, who also has a husband in Iraq, said. "It was wonderful and the Steelers were so gracious."

Which band outplayed and outlasted? The Steelers, of course.
