The Steelers playoff run means the return of the Terrible Tree in the courtyard of the Allegheny County Courthouse downtown.
The trimming of the tree began around 10:00 a.m. today, but fans are being urged bring their decorations to help deck the 20 foot tree in black in gold.
"I'm a Steeler fan, it's the spirit," said Jack Dobranski, of North Versailles. "It brings everybody up and it brings the whole town together."
Dobranski is part of a highly-trained team of county workers whose flare for decorating is unequaled when it comes to all things Steelers. He says the key to decorating the tree is taking your time.
"You got to look to see where they fit so everything fits in real nice and it don't look all junked up," Dobranski advised.
The Terrible Tree came about as an idea by one county worker who was sad to see all the holiday décor come down at once.
"It's a group effort, but I came up with it. I've been with the county for 22 years. Up in our individual office we always did a Terrible Tree, after the holidays, when they went to the playoffs," said Kathy Colosimo. "When we were going for the Super Bowl run, I hated to see the tree come down and just said, 'Why don't we make it a Terrible Tree?'"
The workers also say no Steelers fan should ever doubt the power of the tree.
"There's something to the magic of the tree," says Colosimo.
Tree decorator Sam Riston, of Brookline, says just believing in the tree will take the team all the way.
"It has magical powers," says Riston.
To get those powers really working, a Steelers pep rally is set for this Friday. The festivities are set to start at noon around the tree.
