Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver and former Ohio State football player Santonio Holmes is facing a charge of misdemeanor marijuana possession.
Holmes will reportedly be mailed a summons by police who say they found marijuana-filled cigars known as blunts in his car during a traffic stop.
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said today that Holmes has been deactivated and he will not play on Sunday against the Giants.
Police say the 24-year-old, third-year player, didn't have his license when police stopped him Thursday around 4 p.m. near Mellon Arena.
A police sergeant says Holmes pointed out three blunts after officers smelled the odor of burning marijuana.
Police Sergeant R. Griffith says Holmes was not arrested in Thursday's incident.
Holmes and his agent could not immediately be reached for comment.
The sergeant says police stopped Holmes because he was driving a dark vehicle similar to one believed to be involved in drug trafficking. However, police said that Holmes' vehicle was not the one they were seeking.
Holmes has had other run-ins with the law since the Steelers drafted him out of Ohio State in the first round in 2006.
In June 2006, he was charged with domestic violence in Columbus. Those charges were dropped when the mother of one of his three children declined to help prosecutors.
