Santonio Holmes' Drug Charge Dropped

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― A drug possession charge against Steeler wide-receiver Santonio Holmes was dropped this morning.

Prosecutors said they could not sustain their burden of proof because of concerns raised by the defense about the search of Holmes' car.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's office announced their decision at a hearing before Judge Lester Mauhaus to determine whether the search was valid.

The defense argued that Holmes was not the target of an anonymous tip to police that a drug delivery was to be made in the Hill District last October that that the stop that turned up a small amount of marijuana in Holmes car was not constiutional.

Holmes said little to reporters after the hearing but his lawyer, Robert DelGreco, said the decision justified his position all along.

"I think there's two bottom lines," said DelGreco. "One that the tip was anonymous and that the quality of the information in the anonymous tip was such that it was not specific enough to justify a search. And that was the way we felt all along and after doing some research and having some conferences with the commonwealth's attorneys we reached the same conclusion."

Holmes could have faced a maximum 30 days in jail had he been convicted of the posession charge.
