Dan Rooney Speaks Out On Sale Of Team

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― All that's left is the ink on the deal but so far that hasn't happened yet.

The awaited deal is the one that would give Dan Rooney controlling interest in the Steelers to comply with the NFL rules about family gaming interests.

It was clear Dan Rooney was not ready to give detailed information about the imminent deal with his brothers that would sell him controlling interest in the Steelers.

Art Rooney, Jr. tells KDKA the deal is worth between $750 million and $800 million pending certain debt obligations.

"It's only done when it's signed. I've not been or received any information that it has been," Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney said.

But John Rooney, who told KDKA he will only retain a third of his original 16 percent stake in the team, sees all the pieces fitting together by the end of the year.

"I think we could sign agreements within weeks and then it has to be approved by the league and hopefully we have it done by the 31st of December," he said.

Patrick Rooney, who sells his Steeler interest because of his race track interest, says he thinks about the legacy of his father, Art Sr., as the sale nears completion.

"Our father was every bit as much a race tracker as he was a football guy," he says. "I mean he loved the race track and he came to the race track all the time both in New York and in Philadelphia and down in Palm Beach so you know I was raised in a segment other than football that my father was very, very involved in."

The deal could be approved at the Steelers board meeting December 8 and then head to the NFL owners meeting on December 17.
