Critics Call Heinz Field Game 'Natural Disaster'

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―

The grounds crew at Heinz Field will be working hard this week to get the field ready for Sunday's matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Monday night's rain coupled with new sod complicated matters for the Steelers and the Dolphins, leaving both teams to struggle in a muddy mess.

Critics from national media have called the game a "natural disaster." But the Steelers are speaking out about the messy field conditions.

In a statement, Steelers President Art Rooney II says the field conditions during last night's game were "less than satisfactory" and team officials consulted with the NFL and their grounds crew before putting in the new sod.

"Unfortunately, we were faced with about the worst possible weather conditions and we acknowledge that it did have an impact on the playing surface.

"We will continue to work with the NFL Game Operations people this week as our grounds crew works to improve the conditions of the field in time for Sunday night's game against the Cincinnati Bengals," Rooney said.

A field goal in the last 17 seconds of the game by Jeff Reed led to a Steelers victory.  The final score was 3-0.

It was the lowest scoring game in the history of televised "Monday Night Football."
