Rooney Sworn In As Ambassador To Ireland

VIDEO: Uncut Ceremony

WASHINGTON (KDKA) ― Pittsburgh Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney was sworn-in Wednesday as the new Ambassador to Ireland.

Rooney was nominated to the post on St. Patrick's Day by President Barack Obama and confirmed last week by the Senate.

He was officially sworn-in at a ceremony this afternoon in Washington D.C. by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

During the service, Clinton highlighted Rooney's dedication to his family's heritage, including his work with the American Ireland Fund.

It aims to "unite people of Irish descent" in aiding the European country, Clinton said.

"There is no greater champion of Irish-American relations than Dan Rooney," Clinton said. "I am confident that with Dan Rooney as our ambassador our partnership will thrive."

Rooney said his family experiences in Ireland will serve him well in his new job.

"My family is from Newry, which is on the border between Northern Ireland and Ireland, and so I saw first hand, as the Secretary said, the devastation and the human suffering that people went through."

Rooney and his wife will leave for Ireland soon to assume his post.
