Pirates Pound D'Backs 10-3
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Garrett Jones broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with his 10th home run of the season as the Pirates defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-3 Friday night.
Zach Duke got his first win in a month after pitching 6 1-3 innings allowing three runs and 10 hits, while striking out four and walking none. Duke's record improved to 9-9.
With the score tied 2-2 in the fifth, Jones connected on a Yusmeiro Petit offering that barely cleared the fence in right-field. The two-run blast was the first home run of the season for Jones with a runner on base.
The 28-year-old Jones is hitting .342 with 17 extra-base hits since being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on June 30. His 10 homers tied Donn Clendenon's franchise record for July.
Petit dropped to 0-5 on the season in the loss. He threw just 4 1-3 innings, giving up nine hits and six runs while walking one and striking out six.
The third game of the Pirates four-game set with the Diamondbacks will be at 8:10 p.m. Saturday.
The probable pitching match-up will be Ross Ohlendorf (8-7, 4.59) against Doug Davis (4-10, 3.95.)
