Valuable Ring Stolen From Chuck Tanner

NEW CASTLE (KDKA) ― He led the Pirates to the World Series Championship in 1979, but now Chuck Tanner is asking for help.

He says someone stole a ring off his pinky finger while he was at the Jameson Hospital in New Castle. He was spending the night there while undergoing tests for cancer.

"So as I was sleeping … somebody come in and scarfed it," Tanner told KDKA's Bob Allen.

The ring is described as gold with black opal and worth more than $10,000. It was given to him in 1972 by a former owner of the Chicago White Sox. He managed the team from 1971-1975 and guided the team to second place in 1972.

Tanner and New Castle Police are more concerned about getting the ring back than with prosecuting the person who stole it.

"This is a really stupid thing to do for them to do it," New Castle Police Chief Thomas Sansone said. "If they want to have a change of heart and give this ring back, I mean for purely nothing but the sentimental value to Mr. Tanner, there'll be no questions asked."

Police say they're checking pawn shops throughout the region and because the ring was one of a kind, they think it will be very difficult to sell on places like eBay.
