Andrew McCutchen Named Rookie Of The Year

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Pittsburgh Pirates lost 99 games this season, but there was a silver lining in the end.

Outfielder Andrew McCutchen was named the 2009 Major League Rookie of the Year by Baseball America on Monday.

McCutchen played in 108 games with the Bucs and had a .286 batting average with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs. He showed his speed on the basepaths by swiping 22 bags as well.

The Pirates selected McCutchen with the 11th overall pick in 2005.

McCutchen also had 26 doubles and nine triples to add to his impressive debut. His 47 extra-base hits were tops among rookies in the league.

Another bright spot for the Pirates was Garret Jones being named to the 2009 Baseball America All-Rookie team.

Jones played in 82 games this season and had a .293 batting average with 21 home runs and 44 RBI. His 21 home runs led all rookies in the league.
