It's Official: Mellon Arena Will Open For Game 1

And fans can gear up for the games with a pep rally in Market Square on Friday

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Excitement is building for the Penguins match-up against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Team officials are opening up Mellon Arena so fans can gather and watch the game together, and in the meantime, fans can get ready for the faceoff with a rally on Friday.

Local officials are encouraging Penguins' fans to come out to Market Square for the rally tomorrow afternoon.

Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato want fans to "Pack The Square."

The festivities will get underway at noon. Fans are also being encouraged to wear their black and gold.

Meanwhile, the officials with the Penguins say they are opening up Mellon Arena to fans so they can watch Games 1 & 2 on the Jumbotron inside.

Team officials say they will open the arena at 7 p.m. on both Saturday and Monday night. Also, admission will be $5 and the all the proceeds will be donated to the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer and neonatal research. Tickets are being sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.

After 6 p.m., officials say parking will be free and concession stands will be open inside the arena.

However, the large LCD screen outside will go dark for those games, but will be back up and running when the Pens come home for games 3 & 4.
