Pens Dominate Maple Leafs 5-2

Pittsburgh Penguins Blog

TORONTO (KDKA) ― The Pittsburgh Penguins returned to the site of Michel Therrien's final game as head coach of the team and made sure the result was different this time around.

First period goals by Matt Cooke and a powerplay tally by Sergei Gonchar set the tone early and the Pens cruised to a 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Saturday night.

The Leafs tried to intimidate the Penguins early on, but took some ill-advised penalties that swung all the momentum in favor of Pittsburgh.

With a 2-0 lead after the first period and a 14-2 edge in shots, the Penguins appeared close to opening the flood gates. However, Jay Rosehill beat Brooks Orpik to a loose puck in the crease to net his first NHL goal and cut the lead in half at 2:01 of the second period.

Just 16 seconds later, Matt Stajan took a hooking penalty and the Penguins' powerplay made quick work of it.

Evgeni Malkin rifled a shot wide of the net that caromed off the endboards and out the other side right on the tape of Sidney Crosby, who deposited it behind Vesa Toskala for the 3-1 edge.

With just under six minutes to play in the second period, Rosehill took a boarding penalty and 21 seconds later, Crosby deflected home a blast from Malkin to put the Pens up 4-1.

The three powerplay goals by the Pens proved to be the difference in the game.

Niklas Hagman cut the lead to 4-2 at the 1:01 mark of the third period after slamming home a rebound.

Just over a minute later, Malkin forced a turnover to the right of Toskala and fed a streaking Jordan Staal for a one-timer under the crossbar and the game's final goal.

The Penguins' record now stands at 4-1, good enough for first place in the division and Eastern Conference. The Pens are currently tied for the league lead with the Calgary Flames.
