Panthers Vs. Penguins Preview

Pittsburgh Penguins Blog

By: Casey Shea
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Pittsburgh Penguins will look for their seventh straight win when they take the ice at Mellon Arena against the Florida Panthers (2-5) Friday night.

This will be the third game of a five-game homestand for the Pens, who knocked off Tampa Bay 4-1 and St. Louis 5-1 already.

This will also be the first game the Penguins will play without Sergei Gonchar, who suffered a broken wrist against the Blues and will miss up to six weeks.

Martin Skoula will replace Gonchar in the lineup and make his Penguins debut tonight.

According to the Penguins official Website, Alex Goligoski will be promoted to the top defensive pairing alongside Brooks Orpik and Skoula will play with Jay McKee.

Brent Johnson will look to even up his record on the season at 1-1, as Marc-Andre Fleury will be given the night off to rest up for New Jersey on Saturday.

Johnson lost his only start this season 3-0 to the Phoenix Coyotes on Oct. 7. That loss is the only one the Pens have suffered this season. He is 6-3-0-1 with a 2.42 GAA and .921 save percentage against the Panthers in his career.

The Panthers come into tonight's game after a 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.

In the first period of that game, the Panthers allowed five goals and saw starting goalie Scott Clemmensen pulled within three minutes.

Tomas Vokoun (1-5, 3.68 GAA, .904 save percentage) is expected to be in goal for the Panthers against the Penguins.

Vokoun is 6-7-2-1 with a 2.65 GAA and .920 save percentage in his career against the Penguins.

After winning his first start of the season, Vokoun has gone 0-5. He also has not allowed less than three goals in his six appearances this season. To his credit, the Panthers lead the league in shots allowed with an average of 36.6 per game.

The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. and can be seen on FSN Pittsburgh.
