NY Islanders Trade Guerin To Penguins

New York To Receive Conditional Draft Pick That Could Change Depending On Pittsburgh's Playoff Success

NEW YORK (AP) ― The New York Islanders have traded team captain Bill Guerin to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional draft pick, according to published reports.

The Islanders will receive a fifth-round pick that could become a third-round selection depending on how Pittsburgh does in the playoffs.

The trade, first reported by The Sports Network of Canada and later confirmed by Newsday, sends Guerin, 38, to the eighth NHL team of his 16-year career.

Guerin, who joined the Islanders via free agency in 2007, had 16 goals and 20 assists in 61 games this season. He had sat out the team's two previous games awaiting a trade and had been rumored to be going to an Eastern Conference contender.

Guerin is going from the league's worst team to one of its most talented. He will now likely be playing on a line with Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin as the Penguins try to get back to the Stanley Cup finals for the second straight season.
