They had to lose eventually.
And that they did Saturday night against the New Jersey Devils, 4-1, marking the end of a seven-game winning streak for the now 9-2-0 Pittsburgh Penguins.
Despite the "new NHL" era, in which finesse, speed and skill prevail, New Jersey brought back some of the old, i.e. the trap, and played it successfully for three periods.
Pittsburgh started strong, registering the first six shots of the game, but it took just one for New Jersey to get on the scoreboard.
At 9:50 of the first period, Mark Fraser directed a puck toward Marc-Andre Fleury. The puck bounced in the air before Fleury ultimately knocked it in behind him while trying to catch it.
It was that kind of night for the Penguins.
With New Jersey on the power-play, Nicklas Bergfors collected a puck that just squeezed through Fleury and knocked it in to give his team a 2-0 lead at 14:31 of the second period.
Down 2-0 in the third period, the Penguins hoped to make a strong final push, but New Jersey opened the period with a deflating cushion goal by Travis Zajac just 26 seconds in.
Alex Goligoski would give the Penguins life at 9:36 of the third period before scoring a Pascal Dupuis rebound from around the right circle.
Zack Parise tallied a fourth goal to seal the deal for New Jersey at 16:32 of the third period, and the Devils skated away with two points.
Pittsburgh takes on Montreal Wednesday night at Mellon Arena.
