Gonchar To Undergo Surgery, Out For Months

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his dislocated shoulder Thursday.

He is expected to be sidelined for four to six months.

Gonchar was injured during the first period of the Penguins' preseason opener on Sept. 20.

"It is always difficult to lose a very talented player and leader for an extended period of time, but we all believe this is the best decision for Sergei," said Ray Shero, the Penguins' executive vice president and general manager. "We are confident that he will come back strong after this surgery. In the meantime, we'll look to our other defensemen to step up in his absence."

Gonchar, 34, ranked second in scoring among NHL defensemen in each of the past two seasons and had registered 615 points (185 goals, 430 assists) in 904 career NHL games.
