Pens Pick Defenseman In 1st Round Of NHL Draft

MONTREAL (KDKA) ― Earlier this month, the Penguins skated the Stanley Cup for the third time in their storied history.

Just a few weeks later, all eyes were on the future with the NHL Draft.

Because they won the championship, the Pens had the last pick.

And with that, Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Ray Shero welcomed in 17-year-old defenseman, Simon Despres, from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Despres, who is 6'4" tall and 205 pounds, was ranked much higher than 30th on most pre-draft boards.

Also, the Pens salary cap will be going up $100,000 next year to $56.8 million from $56.7 million.

That means the Pens still have about $8 million in salary cap room for next year.
