Pens Beat 'Canes, 3-2 In Shootout

By: Sergei Feldman
RALEIGH, N.C. (KDKA) ― After nearly squandering a two-goal lead in the third period Wednesday night, the Pittsburgh Penguins held off the Carolina Hurricanes at the RBC Center and skated off with a 3-2 shootout victory.

The win capped off a four-game winning streak--all on the road--and improved Pittsburgh's overall record to 6-1-0.

Pittsburgh remains undefeated on the road at 4-0-0.

Like the three previous games, the Penguins controlled most of the 60-minute challenge and countered their opponent's momentous shifts with some of their own.

After Carolina held the Penguins pinned in their own zone, defenseman Alex Goligoski and forward Evgeni Malkin got the puck up ice.

A well-positioned Mike Rupp collected the puck off the right-wing boards and found himself on a 2-on-1 break, before electing to emulate a perennial 50-goal scorer with a beautiful forehand-backhand shot that left goaltender Cam Ward dazed.

The goal came at 14:24 of the first period and put the Penguins up 1-0, a lead they would take into the first intermission.

Outshooting Carolina, 14-10, the Penguins topped off a controlled second period with a Malkin roof-job.

A broken play in Carolina territory at 4:27 of the period led to Pascal Dupuis collecting a loose puck around the right circle before dishing it over to an open Malkin.

Malkin would receive the pass and in one motion shoot it top-shelf from almost the goal line over Ward's shoulder and put the Penguins up, 2-0.

It appeared Pittsburgh would conclude its four-game road trip with a shutout, at worst, but Carolina found life on a slick redirect off the stick of Ray Whitney at 4:25 of the third period.

Under six minutes later, Whitney would tally his second of the night to even the score at 2-2, when a Tim Gleason shot from the point hit his stick in front of the net and behind goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

End-to-end action concluded the third period and took the game into overtime.

The Penguins outplayed and outshot Carolina in overtime, but couldn't capitalize on their chances and the game would be decided by a shootout.

Chris Kunitz would win it for Pittsburgh in the sixth round. Sidney Crosby, held off the scoresheet for the second consecutive game, got the other goal.

Jussi Jokinen scored the lone goal for Carolina.

Notes:

-The win improved Marc-Andre Fleury's record to 6-0-0 on the year.

-Chris Bourque earned his second start with the Penguins in place of Eric Godard.

-Six of the team's next seven games will be played at Mellon Arena, beginning with Saturday's 7:30 p.m. match with former Penguin Ryan Malone's Tampa Bay Lightning.
