In their last game of the preseason, the Penguins headed back to Detroit where earlier this year they hoisted the Stanley Cup.
But in their first showdown since the Stanley Cup Final, the Pens fell to the Red Wings 4-1 Sunday afternoon.
The Pens struck first as Pascal Dupuis scored just 1:42 into the game. His shot from the bottom of the right circle deflected in off the leg of Detroit defenseman Derek Meech.
But Johan Franzen tied it for the Red Wings at 6:09 with a power-play goal. He wove his way from along the right wing boards to the high slot, where he beat Marc-Andre Fleury with a high wrist shot.
Pavel Datsyuk and Jason Williams each had a goal and an assist. Ville Leino also scored and Brian Rafalski assisted on all four goals for Detroit.
Detroit's Jimmy Howard made 25 saves, while Fleury made 20 stops for the Pens.
Pittsburgh's Bill Guerin received a 10-minute misconduct penalty when he and Chris Kunitz jumped Franzen after he had been shoving with Pens' defenseman Kris Letang in the third period.
Kunitz got a roughing penalty and Franzen received minors for cross checking and high sticking.
Also, Howard stopped Jordan Staal on a penalty shot.
Staal was awarded the opportunity when he was impeded from behind by Detroit defenseman Andy Delmore on a short-handed breakaway.
Neither Sidney Crosby nor Red Wings' captain Nicklas Lidstrom played in the game.
