Pens Beat Canadiens, 6-1

By: Sergei Feldman
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Halloween is still a few days away, but Sidney Crosby treated the capacity Mellon Arena crowd with a few tricks tonight.

Three to be exact.

Crosby's third career hat trick propelled the Penguins to a 6-1 thrashing of the visiting Montreal Canadiens and ended the team's one-game skid.

The game concluded Pittsburgh's five-game homestand in which the team went an impressive 4-1-0 and improved its overall record to 10-2-0.

Despite a somewhat lethargic start by both teams, the Penguins escaped the first period with a 1-0 lead and momentum on their side.

On a broken play just inside Montreal territory, forward Chris Kunitz batted a puck out of the air and fed it to an open Bill Guerin.

With a 2-on-1 near goaltender Jaroslav Halak, Guerin saucered a pass right to Crosby's tape before he one-timed it in the twine at 8:33 of the first period.

Pittsburgh all but sealed the deal in the second period, scoring three goals and extending its lead to 4-0.

At 5:08 of the second period, Crosby, positioned right around the net, found a loose puck during a scramble and backhanded the puck top-shelf behind Halak for his second of the night.

Midway through the period, Mike Rupp, not known for his scoring prowess, tallied his third of the season after poking the puck between Halak's legs during a scrum around the net.

Then, less than three minutes later, Crosby brought the house down with a nifty forehand-backhand-forehand move while 1-on-1 against Montreal's goalie.

After a Tomas Plekanec power-play goal at 5:39 of the third, Pittsburgh struck again on a power-play of its own.

Alex Goligoski threw a shot toward then goalie Carey Price. The puck had eyes and went top-shelf and by Price's glove to give Pittsburgh a 5-1 advantage.

With just under four minutes remaining, Chris Kunitz earned his first goal of the season and gave the Penguins a 6-1 lead which was how the game would end.

Kunitz and Guerin also picked up three assists on the night.

Pittsburgh takes on the Columbus Blue Jackets on the road Friday night and returns to Mellon Arena to play the Minnesota Wild in a back-to-back weekend.
