Penguins: Hossa Will Test Free Agency

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Officials with the Pittsburgh Penguins announced today that Marian Hossa will test free agency come July 1.

The Penguins announced today that they have offered Hossa a contract.

But while Hossa does list the Penguins among the top of his list of teams to play for, he will wait until July 1 and see what kinds of offers he gets once he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

That doesn't necessarily mean Hossa will not be back next year.

KDKA's Jory Rand reports that Penguins officials tell him this is not an acrimonious situation.

The team says that while Hossa will wait until July 1, they too will continue to move forward into free agency, and the deal they offered Hossa may not be there next week.

They added that they would like to see him back in uniform next year.

Hossa ranked second on the team in playoff scoring with 12 goals and 14 assists, and finally shed the label of playoff underachiever.
