Pens Snap Losing Streak With OT Win Over Bruins

Pittsburgh Penguins Blog

PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ― The Penguins ended their four-game losing streak in dramatic fashion Saturday night at Mellon Arena with a 6-5 overtime win over the Boston Bruins.

With just 0.4 seconds left in regulation and down by one, the Pens' Bill Guerin tied the game at 5-5 when he scored off a feed from Evgeni Malkin.

Malkin, the reigning NHL scoring champion, had three assists in his return to the lineup after missing seven games due to a shoulder injury.

And Pascal Dupuis scored twice for the Pens, including the winner in overtime, which came when Bruins goalie Tim Thomas mistakenly left the puck along the boards, Jordan Staal picked it up and fed it to Dupius who put it in the net to end the game.

It was his 100th NHL goal and his fifth this season.

Pens' defenseman Jay McKee opened the scoring at 1:42 into the first period. The teams then alternated goals over the next 55 minutes.

The Bruins' Blake Wheeler tied it 6:47 later, but it was Dupuis who gave the Penguins the lead back late in the first with his first goal of the night.

Michael Ryder tied it at 2-2 early in the second for Boston when he lifted a wrist shot over Pens' goalie Brent Johnson's shoulder.

Then, the Pens briefly got the lead back when captain Sidney Crosby deflected in Alex Goligoski's shot midway through the second period.

But the Bruins tied it again when Derek Morris scored. His shot from the point deflected off of Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland's stick and past Johnson.

In the third period, defenseman Mark Eaton gave the Pens their fourth lead of the game when he finished a setup from Crosby.

But the Bruins were able to tie it up again during a 5-on-3 opportunity.

Matt Cooke was given a 4-minute penalty for high-sticking and soon after Crosby headed to the penalty box for tripping.

That's when the Bruins' David Krejci scored his second of the season.

Shortly after, the Bruins pulled ahead for the first time all game when Marco Sturm deflected Zdeno Chara's shot from the point past Johnson.

Despite the win, the Penguins went 0 for 3 on the power play and are now without a power-play goal in eight games.

The Penguins next game is on Monday when the Anaheim Ducks visit Mellon Arena.
