Penguins Beat Blues, 5-1

By: Sergei Feldman
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― The Pittsburgh Penguins left St. Louis singing the blues Tuesday night en route to a 5-1 victory at Mellon Arena.

In the process, their five-game winning streak was extended to six, while their overall record improved to 8-1-1.

Pittsburgh's most effective troika, featuring Jordan Staal, Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy, came to play.

The three combined for four goals on the night, including Kennedy's fifth of the season that gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 11:19 of the first period.

Kennedy and company cycled the puck in St. Louis real estate before the right-handed winger found a seam and slapped a shot past goaltender Chris Mason.

Just over one minute later, with the Penguins on a power-play, Evgeni Malkin gave his team a 2-0 lead.

After three cracks at the net from the slot, Malkin's shot finally found a hole and went behind a screened Mason.

It was all Pittsburgh after the first period of play, as it outshot St. Louis, 20-3, and took a 2-0 lead into the second period.

Not surprisingly, the second frame greeted Pittsburgh with yet another two strikes.

Ruslan Fedotenko converted on the power-play at 7:29 before Cooke deflected a Kris Letang shot from the point 36 seconds later.

Just like that, the game was out of reach, despite St. Louis' lone tally of the night at 12:54 of the period.

Paul Kariya deflected an Erik Johnson shot behind Marc-Andre Fleury, who looked as sharp as he has all season.

Fleury improved to 8-0-0 on the season.

At 9:44 of the third period, Alex Goligoski gave the Penguins their fifth and final goal when Sidney Crosby fed the streaking defenseman in the slot for a quick release behind former Penguin Ty Conklin.

Pittsburgh outshot St. Louis, 43-23, outscored them 5-1 and its play was indicative of both.

Notes:

- Defenseman Sergei Gonchar did not play in the third period. At this point it is an undisclosed injury.

- The Penguins take on the Florida Panthers at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at Mellon Arena.
