Gonchar & Malone Hurt In 2nd Period

DETROIT (AP) ― Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar and left wing Ryan Malone were injured during the second period of Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals against the Detroit Red Wings.

Gonchar lost his balance and fell head-first into the end boards while chasing a 2-on-1 Red Wings breakout.

The veteran defenseman was helped up by trainers and taken to the locker room.

Not long after, Malone was struck in the face by a slap shot by Hal Gill. He rushed off the ice with blood dripping into a towel.

It was not immediately clear whether they would return for the final period or the extent of their injuries. Pittsburgh led the game 2-1. Detroit leads the series 3-1.
