WVU Upsets Pitt 19-16 In 102nd Backyard Brawl
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (KDKA/AP) ―
The "Backyard Brawl" is known nationwide as one of college football's most intense rivalries, and the 102nd meeting between Pitt and WVU Friday night lived up to the hype.
For the first time since their 13-9 upset sent Morgantown into shock two years ago, the Pitt Panthers were back in Mountaineer territory.
But this time the roles were reversed as the Panthers are ranked ninth in the BCS and playing for the Big East championship, while West Virginia University was looking for a signature win and some revenge.
With a 19-16 victory, the Mountaineers got some - and also ended Pitt's six-game win streak.
The Mountaineers held the Panthers out of the end zone on five drives inside the 30 yard line.
But with 2:54 left in the game, Pitt quarterback Bill Stull found Jonathan Baldwin with a 50-yard touchdown toss to tie the score at 16-16.
However, that gave Jarrett Brown just enough time to move West Virginia 42 yards into position for the game-winning field goal.
WVU's Tyler Bitancurt kicked the 43-yarder as time expired giving the Mountaineers the game.
The Mountaineers' Noel Devine rushed for 134 yards.
For the Panthers, Dion Lewis ran for 155 yards and Dan Hutchins kicked three field goals.
The Panthers can still earn the conference's BCS berth with a win at home next week against No. 5 Cincinnati.
That game is set for Dec. 5 at Heinz Field.
