The Penguins thought they had a little energy injection as they battled the Senators at Scotiabank Place.
Both Sergei Gonchar and Max Talbot were in the lineup.
Despite that, however, the power play continued to be powerless as the Pens suffered their worst loss of the year.
Chris Phillips scored twice in his 800th regular-season game and Pascal Leclaire made 25 saves, leading the Ottawa Senators to a 6-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night.
Jordan Staal scored early in the first period, giving the Pens a 1-0 lead their only lead during the game.
Ottawa's Matt Carkner tied it at 12:16 in the first and the Senators opened a five-goal lead on the Pens, until Evgeni Malkin had a late power play goal in the third.
Milan Michalek scored the only point in the second period on the power play with assists from Daniel Alfredsson and Alexandre Picard.
Phillips had back-to-back goals in a crushing third period for the Pens. Chris Kelly and Jonathan Cheechoo also scored.
Marc-Andre Fleury left at 7:16 in the third period after allowing five goals. Brent Johnson stopped six of seven shots the rest of the way.
The Pens lost Jay McKee this week after beating Anaheim, 5-2 Monday, as he became the latest Pittsburgh blue-line loss, joining Kris Letang, Brooks Orpik and Alex Goligoski.
