Legendary Pittsburgh broadcaster Myron Cope gained fame on the radio airwaves during his 35 years with the Steelers, but before that he was a successful writer.
Cope started his professional career writing for the Daily Times in Erie. He later freelanced for national publications including Sports Illustrated and The Saturday Evening Post. He also wrote five books.
His writing started at Taylor Alderdice High School where Cope was Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper and wrote his first sports column.
His passion for writing never faded, even at the very end. Cope's friend Roy McHugh was with him this morning when he passed away.
"This morning, he suddenly became lucid. His secretary was with him, and he said, 'Bring me a writing tablet and pen and let's go to work.' That was just maybe an hour or so before he died," he said.
Cope's funeral will be private and no plans have been announced for any public memorial service.
