PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) ― The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed linebacker James Farrior to a five-year contract, which includes a $5 million signing bonus and is worth $12.6 million over the first three seasons.

It will keep him with the Steelers through 2012.

The last two years of the deal are meant to lessen the salary cap impact of the deal.

Farrior's agent, Ralph Cindrich, says the deal is meant to keep Farrior with the team until he retires.

The 12-year-veteran played for the New York Jets before joining the Steelers as a free agent in 2002.

Farrior's current contract was due to expire after this year.

He has been one of the Steelers' defensive co-captains since 2004 when he made his first trip to the Pro Bowl.
