Jeff Verszyla's Updated Winter Weather Forecast

(KDKA)

Winter seems to be the time of the year when weather causes some of the biggest disruptions locally.

KDKA's Chief Meteorologist Jeff Verszyla has an updated look at what will be heading our way over the next few months.

According to Verszyla, there is some good news for people who don't like the cold weather because the country as a whole will have one of the warmest winters in the past five years.

He says that's because of the weather phenomenon known as La Nina, which is a cooling in parts of the Pacific Ocean, and influences rainfall and temperatures around the world.

That means warmer temperatures and less snow here in our area.

In December, Verszyla says temperatures will be above normal and we'll have less than a 20 percent chance of a white Christmas because snowfall will be below normal.

However, overall precipitation will actually be above average.

He says milder temperatures will continue in January and we'll see the usual amount of flakes falling. Also, monthly precipitation totals will again come in above average.

Then, in February, he says it probably won't be very wintery. Temperatures will be above 30 year averages with below average snowfall, and normal precipitation.

Unfortunately, Verszyla say that things change in March. This will be the only month with below normal temperatures, more snow than we usually see and normal total precipitation.

Basically, Veszyla says that we're looking at warmer than normal temperatures except in March with 32 inches of snowfall, which is six inches below normal, and we'll actually see more rain than snow.
