Study: Breakfast Important To Keep Teens Fit

(KDKA) A new study confirms what mothers have said for years: breakfast is important.

Now, a report in Pediatrics says it is even more important for teens trying to stay fit.

The study confirms that adolescents who skip breakfast end up having a higher risk of being overweight.

More than one-third of teens aged 12 to 19 are now overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.

In the last 20 years, the proportion has tripled.

The new study followed more than 2,000 adolescents for five years.

Participants completed detailed surveys on their eating patterns and also provided information on their height, weight, body-mass index and physical activity.

The bottom line: the more often a person ate breakfast, the less likely he or she was to be overweight or obese.

The study was published in the March issue of Pediatrics.
