Tips For A Do-It-Yourself Manicure
(KDKA)
A professional manicure is a great way to treat yourself. But, if your current budget is causing you to cut back, you can do it yourself at home.
Pro Manicure at Home
Gather the tools you will need:
2 hand towels, one for the table, one to dry your hands.
Water bowl w/ water and a little shampoo to make suds.
Cotton balls and tissue.
Nail file or emory boards
Cuticle pusher, clipper and brush
Orange wood stick
Cuticle cream
Top coat and or base coat
Nail polish shade
Put a towel on the table and fill your water bowl. Have all your supplies so you can sit until you are finished.
1. Remove old nail polish.
2. Shape nails. File from corner to center of each nail using one stroke in one direction at a time, don't "saw". A fast back and fourth motion can cause nails to split.
3. Soak (one hand at a time) in the water bowl for a minute. Dry fingers, apply cuticle cream to the base of each nail and massage nails. This increases blood circulation to stimulate nail growth.
4. Use a cuticle pusher to gently push back cuticle. Try new LaCross Cuticle sticks, they have a mild pumice type tip that really helps clean the nail surface of cuticle and any left over polish.
5. When finished, gently use a cuticle brush to cleanse finger tips.
6. You can also use an orange wood stick wrapped w/ a bit of cotton to remove any dirt from under the nail. You can also dip the cotton tip orange wood stick in peroxide to remove any staining.
7. Trim any dead skin, don't cut into the cuticle, just the skin that is loose.
8. Dry hands
9. Apply a base coat, nail polish shade then top that off with a quick dry top coat.
10. Clean any excess polish on the skin around the nail with an orange wood stick dipped in nail polish remover.
The same procedure can be used for a pedicure.
If you are a diabetic, consult your doctor before you do any thing to your hands and your feet.
