PennDOT's Advice For Getting Around This Winter

(KDKA) Winter weather usually means trouble for local drivers, but PennDOT is offering some advice for getting around this winter season.

KDKA's Traffic and Transportation reporter Jim Lokay talked with PennDOT District Executive Dan Cessna about the upcoming snowy weather.

Valentine's Day 2007 was the day winter weather paralyzed traffic on Interstate 78 in eastern Pennsylvania, trapping thousands of travelers for more than 20 hours.

Lokay: "What are some of the precautions you take to avoid something like that?"

Cessna: "Certainly, in our region, good close communications with our emergency first responders, being on site, and aware of the conditions you're dealing with."

And even though I-78 is far away, it's a reminder that preparation transcends location.

"It's important to get them [crews] out ahead of time, out on the roads," said Cessna. "Having equipment prepared, and then, the art and skill of our operators in knowing exactly how much material to put down and when is what leads to our success in winter maintenance."

PennDOT's roadway information website, which gets the most use in the winter season, uses cameras and weather stations.

Lokay reports that PennDOT's message this winter is not only to know what's on the road, but also to know what's on your car.

"The thing that really screws up traffic in the first snowfall is people with bald tires out there, sliding, creating traffic havoc for folks," Cessna adds.

He also offered up a few other tips for getting around this winter.

"Slow down," says Cessna. "Stay way back behind our trucks spreading material, don't try to crawl up on our salt trucks. And pay attention for other motorists that might not have their snow tires or might not be as prepared as you are."
