Halloween Costumes That Won't Break The Bank

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― With just three weeks until Halloween, you're probably thinking about costumes.

It turns out you can find some without breaking the bank.

At the Goodwill on McKnight Road in Ross Township, costumes for kids start at just $2.

We found a cowboy costume that retailed for $19.99 selling for $7 and a Superman costume priced at $7 that would normally cost $30.

For adults there are real costumes like Sexy Santa for $7.99 or you can put together your own look for less than $10.

"Catholic school girl, Greek sex goddess and the cowgirl. We have boots and shoes to match, purses anything that you would need for a costume," Bob Stape, vice president of Goodwill, said. "Our prices are much lower and we offer a lot of unique options in our store because you can kind of make your own costume depending on what theme you want to go with."

Store managers say there's a lot of demand this year because of the economy.

While thrift shops have good bargains, another place to check is consignment stores.

Up the road at Once Upon A Child on Route 19 in Wexford, they've been buying costumes all year and started the Halloween season with 38 boxes of merchandise. It's been flying off the racks.

"It's very popular every year but this year in particular seems – you know, it's more important to people to be trying to save money where they can," Lisa Heller, store manager, said.

When we were there, they still had a Dorothy costume for $10 and a vampire for just $4.50. The beauty is, once your children have worn the discount costumes, you can sell them back to the store for cash.

"That's a substantial savings especially if you have more than one child," Heller said.

There are still some good deals to be found online. At BuyCostumes.com, they offer five costumes for under $5 five days a week.

But you'd better be online right when the sale begins at 10 a.m. because these costumes sell fast.
