50 Years, 50 Families: Winnie Jackson
(KDKA)
A local grandmother, taking care of her granddaughters following the death of her own daughter eight years ago, is the second recipient of the Roomful Express 50 Years, 50 Families contest.
In addition, Winnie Jackson, of Wilkinsburg, says she watches three grand nephews when her grandkids are in school.
Jackson's daughter, LaTanya Walker, died from injuries back in 2000 when she was stabbed during a fight in a bar.
Her grandchildren say they are thankful for their grandma.
"She's nice," said Destiny Irish, one of Jackson's granddaughters. "I'm glad she was there when my mother died so somebody could take care of us."
Right now, they have no furniture for their family room and Jackson also says that she does not have her own bed. She says she and her family have to pull dining room chairs and a stool into their family room just to sit and watch television.
Jackson says the furniture that she owned was all ruined when the pipes burst in a house she was renting. She said she lost her couch, clothes, important papers, photographs, children's games and their television set was stolen.
Jackson says after leaving her mom's cramped quarters, she's been in her Wilkinsburg home for about a month.
And now Roomful Express is giving Jackson up to $3,000 worth of living room furniture and a bed to help make their house more of a home.
While Jackson says it is tough to make ends meet on Social Security, she adds that she wouldn't have it any other way. She adds the furniture she's about to get is an answer to her prayers.
