Many Working Families Need Help From Turkey Fund

GLASSPORT (KDKA) ― Record numbers of people need help getting food on the table Thanksgiving Day this year, and many of them have never needed help before.

Amy Fenton of Glassport says she bakes from scratch to feed her family of four. It's one more way to save money in times that are tight.

Her husband recently returned form Iraq. He's working two jobs to try to meet the family bills. Amy says she and many of her friends consider themselves the working poor.

"They're in the same boat that we're in – you know, trying to make ends meet, you know. Trying to get up everyday and are you wondering, 'Is the cable getting shut off?' or, 'Is the water getting shut off, or is the gas or the lights?'

"You get a bill and it's due and it's due in between paychecks and you're sitting there and your son or daughter says, 'Oh, can I have money for this or money for that?' and you have to say no," Amy tells KDKA.

This year for the first time, Amy reached out for help. She went to the Salvation Army where she was able to get Dollar Energy funds to help with the utilities and she learned how to get help from the food pantry and the Turkey Fund.

It is help that Amy and her family could use, but Amy says asking for that help isn't easy.

"You tend to be a proud person .. for the simple fact that you're working and … this is what you strive for and you want to provide for your family and how did your parents provide for you," she said. "So you tend to be a little bit proud and sometimes you have to humble yourself."

It is hard to ask and it is harder than ever for people to help as much as they have in the past. That's why we are asking if you are making it now, please help others who are not so fortunate and give to the Turkey Fund.
