Website Allows Users To 'Swap' Items
It's been said that when times get tough, the tough go shopping, but with the economy the way it is these days, that's easier said than done, which makes a new internet service called Swap Tree all the more valuable.
The site allows you to trade away items like books, DVDs and CDs that you no longer want, and get items that you do want in return. And the best part is it's completely free, except for postage.
Bill and Aimee Gallagher swear by the site, where they've traded hundreds of items. "If I got involved it's simple enough for a caveman, like they say and anyone can do it," said Bill Gallagher. The Gallaghers especially like trading their daughter Molly's old DVDs that she's outgrown for new ones she hasn't watched yet.
To make a Swap Tree trade, you first type in the bar code found on the item you want to swap, and describe its condition on a drop down menu.
You can then browse for items currently available or Swap Tree searches for items you have on a wish list. When a match is made, you're alerted by e-mail and have 48 hours to accept or reject the trade.
Sometimes the computer-matched trade can involve more than two people, which has happened to the Gallaghers. "It could be up 3, 4, 5. But you're just told what item to ship where and what item you'll be getting and from whom."
While the trades are item for item, you can trade like items, for instance a book for a book, or different items, like a CD for a movie.
Once a trade is accepted you ship your item using your own postage or a pre-paid label you can print out.
Users can rate the trade after it's complete and can also offer everything from book reviews to their own music or movie critiques on the items listed.
Users also like the fact that Swap Tree is environmentally friendly: instead of tossing old books or CDs in the trash, they get a new life with someone else.
