50 Years, 50 Families: Carol & Tony Haley
LOWER TYRONE (KDKA) ―
Fire recently destroyed a home in Fayette County and now a retired steelworker and his wife have to start from scratch, just when they thought they'd be enjoying the fruits of their labor.
Carol and Tony Haley are this week's recipients of the 50 Years, 50 Families program.
Holding hands through it all, Carol and Tony are starting over after what was their home in Lower Tyrone is now a big hole.
The Haleys were in Pittsburgh when a wire in a wall caught fire. The house and everything inside had to be demolished.
"It's your parents and you watch them work so hard for everything they had and it was taken away in one day," Diane Gondura, the couple's daughter, said.
Tony lost more than 40,000 pictures that he took in the house fire and 300,000 baseball cards. On to of that, Carol and Tony are battling with the insurance company that won't pay for her $100,000 heart surgery. And Tony had just had surgery to repair ligaments he ripped while helping tear down the house.
The Haleys, their children and grandchildren were overjoyed to learn Carol and Tony are receiving $3,000 in furniture from Roomful Express.
"They just didn't know how they were going to start all over again and this is a big head start, a blessing," Peggy Maksim, Carol's sister, said.
The Haleys have a new modular home that will be placed on the site of their old home.
