50 Years, 50 Families: The Maurer Family

The Maurer family lost everything in a fire six weeks ago.

A family's home in Shaler was destroyed by fire six weeks ago and now that family is still struggling to get their lives back to any semblance of normal.
Now, a gift of furniture from Roomful Express as part of the 50 Years, 50 Families program is going to give them a big head start in that direction.
In just a matter of minutes, the house that Tina Maurer and her family were renting burned to cinders.
"I came home after cleaning all day, lit a candle on coffee table, answered the phone, came back and the middle of the couch was on fire," she says.
The fire marshal ruled that that candle started the fire. Maurer says she thinks their dog may have knocked it off the table.
The family says almost everything inside was lost, all the furniture, the photographs, the mementos from family members who have passed away.
"As time goes by, day-by-day, you realize more of what you lost, especially personal items and things like that," says Dan Gremba.
Now, the Maurer kids, Joshua, Kayla and Chris, as well as Tina and Dan, are living in three different houses with family and friends while the house they will rent is being fixed up.
But there is a lot to buy to fill a whole house again and that is where Roomful Express is stepping in with $3,000 in furniture.
And the Maurers say they are very appreciative for the new beginning.
