Turkey Fund Commonly Asked Questions:
Q: Who qualifies for these turkeys?
A: Any family who is registered with a food pantry that's part of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank member network, qualifies for a turkey certificate. To qualify with a food pantry, one must have an income that's no more than 150% of the poverty level (federal poverty level for a family of four in 2007 is about $20,600).
Q: How do these people get their turkeys?
A: We hand out gift certificates to be used at local supermarkets. Families can use this money to purchase turkeys, (or hams), potatoes, macaroni and cheese or whatever they need to make Thanksgiving Day special to them. These gift certificates are marked KDKA Turkey Fund. The gift certificates are for $15 each.
Q: Can I get a turkey for my family?
A: If you haven't received one in the past, it may be to late to get one this year. However, if you are in need of food, you will get it. Contact the the Hunger Services Network at 412/681-1121. Once you are in the system, you can probably get a dinner next year.
Q: How long do I have to donate?
A: We take donations on the air right up until the day before Thanksgiving, but our accounts stay open for a few weeks afterwards. Please don't let time be a factor. Turkeys are great on Christmas Day, too.
Q: Is my donation tax deductible?
A: Yes
Q: How many families get turkeys every year?
A: Every year varies, but at least 30,000 families get Thanksgiving Day meals thanks to your donations.
Q: Does money stay local?
A: Yes, the money is distributed throughout the KDKA-TV viewing area. That's twelve counties in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Q: I want more information. Where can I call?
A: Call 412/460-FOOD for the food bank itself.
