CMU Students Come Up With Creative Inventions
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
Some Carnegie Mellon University students may be giving a glimpse into the future.
They've come up with inventions that could make your life easier.
A weed wacker redesigned so it's easier to handle and a device that makes walking in ski boots less annoying.
They are just two senior projects from CMU engineering students that you might wish were available in stores now.
There's even an intelligent baby stroller.
"It recognizes the parents and locks the baby stroller so nobody can use it," said student Brad Hall. "It can't roll away. The only person who can use it is the parent."
The stroller recognizes the person wearing a special bracelet and only moves for them.
Are you tired of your bagel getting stuck in the toaster and then having to pry it out?
"They had trouble with toast actually being stuck in the toaster or they complained because there wasn't as much access to the toast," explained student Leigh Fortenberry.
The solution is to have a toaster where the sides actually fold out.
There's even an exercise bike that charges your I-Pod while you pedal.
"That was the initial idea to capture that energy you're wasting and put it towards something good," said student Carson Male.
They also came up with an ice maker that uses less power than the one you might have in your freezer.
"The new ice falls down into the tray into the basin that you can pull out and get your ice," said student Nick Smarto.
For now, they are just school projects but who knows what these inventors will come up with next.
