The Beauty Editor: Picking New Foundation Shades

Pittsburgh Today Live Beauty Editor Lori Geiger's tips for picking a new foundation

(KDKA) Choosing the right shade of foundation is hard enough, but the new batch of formulas can make it a bit tricky.

The basic way to choose a shade is to test it on the jaw line in a shade that matches your neck. When you can try the shades (as in a department store), pick the shade you think you are, then compare the lighter and darker shade on each side of it. The correct shade will disappear. If you can't try the shades, hold your lower under arm up to the shade chart provided on the display.

Now, if you want to use one of the new formulas, use the basic way and consider this:

Mineral make-up is a mix of shaved minerals in a powder form. A few of them are white, such as titanium dioxide, the staying power ingredient. When you spread a thin coat of this all over your face it gives some opportunity for ingredients to stand alone. I find it is best to choose one shade darker with this type of base.

Foundations with built in primers (Maybelline Superstay) and anti-aging serums(Cover Girl & Olay) are best when chosen one shade darker. These formulas are wonderful products. They go on light and even skin tone and feel great.

Revlon Custom Creations, the foundation in your shade you can adjust is a wonderful product to have in the spring before you get color from the sun. You can adjust it as you tan and at the end of the summer lighten it while your tan fades. Choose this shade with your natural skin tone, before you get a tan.

Tinted moisturizers and the new skin matching makeup (Revlon Beyond Natural) comes in a shade range, such as "fair to light" "med to dark". They are perfect for the person who wants a light coverage and just can't seem to pick the correct shade of base.

Stick, cream and spray foundations are a heavier coverage and the shade MUST be correct here.

It is said that a woman can look 20 years older without foundation! With all the new formulas out there, pick one and wear it!
