Health Dept. Steps Up Vaccination Efforts
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
As the new school year begins, the Pennsylvania State Health Department is stepping up their efforts to make sure students get their mandatory vaccinations.
Officials from the Allegheny County Health Department have been warning parents that if kids aren't vaccinated, then they cannot attend school.
Two years ago, the State Health Department required children to get a second dose of the chickenpox vaccine as well as a meningitis and whooping cough vaccine.
Since that time, there have been letters and phone calls to parents as well as free clinics and seminars.
Now, health officials have started cracking down on those students who have not gotten the vaccines yet.
"Unfortunately, we don't have an option," says Dr. Bruce Dixon, of the Allegheny County Health Department. "This needs to be done, not only for that child, but for society as a whole."
Authorities say right now there are about 20,000 students who don't have required vaccinations.
