Seneca V. Teachers Asked To Reconsider Proposal

CRANBERRY TWP. (KDKA) ―

A new proposal that could have put classes back in session for the Seneca Valley School District was rejected by teachers this morning, but now the district is asking teachers to reconsider the offer.

Officials with the school district tell us the proposal that would have had teachers and School Board members in weekend-long negotiations on the conditions that there was no mediator and teachers would return to class on Friday has been rejected this morning.

But now, the School District is asking teachers to reconsider the proposal. Officials with the district say they are giving teachers until 3pm to re-evaluate.

However, in a statement the teachers say they are still concerned that the School Board is only interested in ending the strike and not reaching an agreement.

Details of the initial proposal say the teacher's union is willing to continue the negotiations with the district as long as professional mediators are not present.

In a letter to the teachers' union earlier this week, the School Board did agree to the weekend-long negotiating sessions, but also said the teachers would have to return to class this Friday.

If the strike continues, officials with the district say the students' holiday vacation will have to be canceled.

The strike can continue until November 15th when teachers will be required to go back in order to get 180 days of classroom instruction.

The teachers have been on strike since October 15th.
