School Districts Pinched By Diesel Fuel Costs

SHALER (KDKA) ― School districts are getting ready for the upcoming school year but high fuel prices are causing some things to change.

Forty-two school districts in the Allegheny Intermediate Unit buy their fuel together and they've locked in the price of diesel at $4.35 a gallon.

That means if the price goes up, their price stays the same but if the price of diesel goes down, what they pay will stay the same.

It's the reason why they're making changes.

"We looked at some of our runs and still looking at a lot of our runs to either we cut a vehicle or combine runs," Charlie Bennett, from the Shaler School District, said.

Extracurricular activities are getting a close review.

"For example, we have our band usually takes five to seven buses to an away game and we can see if we can consolidate that down to a more manageable fleet," Bennett said.

Some schools say they've canceled field trips they planned because with the cost of gas, it won't fit in the budget.
