PennDOT Issues Safety Tips For Back To School Time

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― It's back to school time.

Now that the new academic year is upon us, officials with PennDOT have issued some safety tips for drivers, especially for the morning commute when many students are waiting at the bus stop.

PennDOT says motorists should be aware of school zones, also that school buses are back out on the roads and crossing guards are out again helping to keep the kids safe.

Officials with PennDOT are reminding drivers that state law "requires motorists approaching a school bus with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended to stop at least 10 feet from the bus." Drivers in all directions must stop, unless the bus is on the opposite side of a divided highway.

Also, PennDOT says drivers approaching school zones should slow to the posted speed limit when approaching a school zone.

And officials remind drivers to be aware of a higher number of students who will be walking or riding their bicycles.
