West Mifflin Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Fired

WEST MIFFLIN (KDKA) ― The West Mifflin School Board voted to fire the head coach of the varsity girls basketball team.

Phil Shar, who has won more than 380 games with the school and four consecutive section championships, publicly criticized the superintendant and administration.

"To characterize this administration as being a reign of terror is a comment which I take great offense to," one school board member said.

The superintendant opened the coach's contract after Shar spoke out.

"I made a comment that he didn't like so I got fired," Shar said. "I didn't like his comment and he didn't get fired. It's that simple."

Hundreds of community members attended the meeting, including several of the girls Shar coached.

"I'll be attending Appalachian State this year on a full ride for basketball and I know he had a lot to do with that," says Taylor Fulton who just graduated. "Just a big supporter of all of us on and off the field."

He coached at West Mifflin for 19 years.

The superintendent declined to speak to reporters and did not address the community at the meeting.
