Schenley HS Students Start Classes In New Building
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ―
It's back to class today for thousands of students in the Pittsburgh Public School District.
But for Schenley High School students this first day of school also marks their first day in a new building.
The old building was closed in June and students are now attending the new Schenley High School inside the Reizenstein building located in Shadyside.
In the spring, the school board
voted to close the building because district officials say the cost was too high to make renovations the high school needed to stay open.
But several community groups and advocates protested against closing the building.
While some students say they don't mind the change, others say they liked the old school building.
"No matter what building we're in, it's still Schenley," said Marcellus Adams, a senior, "no matter what they call it."
"There was just something special about Schenley right were it was," said Sarah Dolby, a senior. "Iit was unique and this is just another school a middle school."
Meanwhile, the school district is also dealing with a potential strike by some of its support staff who are negotiating a new contract.
