Program Aims To Teach Students Responsibility

PENN HILLS (KDKA) ― The Penn Hills School District started a new program today aimed at reducing violence among school children and eliminating the stigma associated with "snitching."

Law enforcement officials and other local leaders presented the S.T.A.R. program today at the Washington Elementary School.

The initiative, being called a Responsible Reporting program, is working in conjunction with Safety Kids, Inc.

"We want you to be responsible," one officer told the students. "To do the right thing, to come forward and do the right thing."

The S.T.A.R. program stands for "Stand Together, Act Responsibility." It's to focus is to help stop illegal or unsafe behavior.

"Kids are impressionable," said Diane Brown, of Safety Kids, Inc. "We're trying to catch them at an early age - so we can change their whole mindset of thinking - that they will know that it's the right thing to do to responsibly report something, and not the wrong thing, the bad thing. We want to get to them early."

Officials say if the program goes well, others schools in other communities across the nation will pick up the program.
